Many people change their careers many times during their working lives. Some research indicates that people make at least five moves, and others up to 10, during their working lives.

There are many reasons why change can be a good idea, says Tracey Czakan, Marketing Director at Kelly Group. These include a feeling of dissatisfaction with a job, better growth prospects or simply the desire to pursue a new profession. Here are some tips from Czakan on how to make the transition easier:

• Change for the right reason. Some of the issues you face at one job are likely to show up at other jobs - for example, office politics and stress are common across all workplaces, so it is important to evaluate whether your dissatisfaction is related to the content of your work, the company culture or the people you work with;

• A SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) analysis will help you understand what is upsetting you about your job and map out your career plan. Take the time to think about your new career, so you don't end up hating your new job as much as you did the last one;

• Some of your skills and training will be relevant in your new career. In fact, a new trend is emerging where employers are looking for skills that are not endemic to their industry, believing that these skills will add value. However, you may also need additional training. Most companies offer internal training programmes as well as assistance with outside studies that could help you bridge the skills gap;

• Changing a career is a lot more difficult than changing your job. It may take a lot longer to find a job within your new career than in your current industry. To switch careers, you may need to assess your financial situation and plan accordingly. Also, you may have to start at a lower position than your previous job and work yourself up. Take advantage of all networking potential and find a mentor who can assist you in your new career; and

• Rewrite both your CV and the covering letters you send to potential employers to emphasise the skills and attributes that are relevant in your new career, rather than concentrating on skills that were important in your previous one.
